“From farm to fork” refers to the journey agricultural goods and industrial materials embark on, from their place of origination to the end consumer. The journey sounds simple, but in reality, the supply chain is complex and needs to be controlled with precision to secure delivery.
Increasing our management capabilities throughout the journey from farm to fork allows us to protect supply. The greater our capacity to carefully supervise this journey, the greater the security and value we provide to our customers.
In Southern Africa, we invest in origination, processing and logistic assets at strategic locations to bring the best products and services to our customers. We accomplish this through the Group’s global research, risk management and logistics capabilities.
In Southern Africa, Louis Dreyfus Company is involved in:
Investing in infrastructure that enables growth.
Maize is the most important grain crop in South Africa and is produced throughout the country in diverse environments. Our South Africa office handles both domestic and international merchandizing, distribution, import and export of grain products.
Louis Dreyfus Company is among the market leaders in white maize exports. We also play a significant role in meeting local demand by trading both local and imported wheat crops (mainly from the Black Sea region and Europe).
Louis Dreyfus Company purchases sunflower seed locally from agricultural cooperatives and farmers for delivery to a jointly-owned crushing plant, named Epko, in the northwest of South Africa. We also handle the sales and marketing of sunflower oil and meal. Bulk vegetable oil and grains are shipped in containers to Southern Africa by Louis Dreyfus Company with a constant outlook on increasing market diversity.
Louis Dreyfus Company began trading non-ferrous metals and raw materials in 2006, and entered the Southern Africa region in 2007. LDC Metals is present in all major origination and sales regions, providing a strong network of resources to meet the needs of our global customer base. The Metals team has developed a strong presence in this market, helped by the reputation and capabilities of the Louis Dreyfus Company’s research function.
Louis Dreyfus Company is a world-leading rice merchandizer, sourcing rice from multiple origins to satisfy the world’s rising demand. We source and process paddy, brown, milled and parboiled rice from Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Myanmar, the US, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
In South Africa, the Rice Platform has been a major importer of bulk rice since its inception in 2006, executing CIF and ex-warehouse sales mainly through the Durban port. Good customer relationships, a focus on quality and reliable supply have been the pillars of our distribution activity in the country.
In 2013, we established a packing plant for premium rice, which retails under the brands Allsome and D’lite across Southern Africa. This packing plant is managed jointly with the Willowton Group, South Africa’s leading importer, producer and retailer of oils and oil products.

Sustainability is a key topic at Louis Dreyfus Company. Our commitment to operate sustainably is of vital importance for our relationships with customers, suppliers, financial institutions and the communities where we are active.
In South Africa, our approach to Corporate Responsibility is through philanthropy and the opportunity to give back. Our goal is to provide for those less fortunate by supporting charitable initiatives such as the African Leadership Academy, implemented in cooperation with the Louis Dreyfus Foundation.
In 2015, we participated in the #StationaryDrive initiative through which we donated stationary packs to Llaluma Primary school in Soweto. Through this contribution, Louis Dreyfus Company provided young students with the necessary day-to-day items with which to complete their daily classroom tasks.
Learning flourishes in a productive environment, and our office is proud to have played a role in ensuring that the needs of students were met for a period of time. Children are one of the best investments, and there is no worthier cause than providing for their future.
In 2014, Louis Dreyfus Company, through its Joint Venture NWK Agriculture Service in Zambia, implemented a pilot project to help mechanize Zambian smallholdings. Since its implementation, the initiative has achieved great success, with more than 130 Zambian farmers receiving the necessary financing to ensure that mechanized plowing and planting can commence throughout the full length of the cotton growing and harvesting season. This initiative enables farmers to build their own capabilities and efficiency in the farming sector, while supplying cotton to NWK to sell to customers around the world.
